About us

Physicists uncover the laws of nature and use them to shed light on the world around us and to tackle some of our
biggest challenges.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is where physicists come together to share their knowledge, to solve problems, to drive
themselves and their subject forward, and to celebrate and share their successes.

Our community is made up of people from across the UK, Ireland and internationally, including professional
members from academia, industry and government, technicians, teachers, apprentices and students, as well as
those who simply have a passion for physics.

Our community works together to determine the future for physics, to set professional standards for one another, to
support one another in their development, and to make sure our collective voice is heard about the importance of
physics in areas such as science funding, energy, environmental and medical policy, and physics education.

In partnership, we develop future generations of physicists by improving everyone’s experience of physics and
showing what an exciting area it is.

Our work is supported by IOP Publishing, a world-leading publisher of journals, e-books, websites and magazines,
including the Institute’s flagship publication, Physics World.
