Another great Bath Taps Into Science Fair

For the 4th year running the Physics stand at Bath Taps Into Science made its presence felt, despite the biggest ever number of contributors at this year’s Hands-on Science Fair.  Helped by an enthusiastic bunch of students from the Physics Department at Bath University, visitors produced plenty of noise from cups, coat-hangers, lolly-sticks and even a bin!

The 2 day National Science & Engineering Week event on Fri 12th & Sat 13th March won an award for Best Science Event in 2009 and certainly lived up to its well-earned reputation this year.  Once again Marvin & Milo’s simple physics experiments intriuged and entertained young and old alike – with around 800 people visiting the stand during the 2 day event.

A particular favourite on Friday was the Inseparable Books Tug of War.  Kindly provided by the Science Learning Centre South West these 2 carefully interleaved catalogues proved impossible to pull apart.  Even with the combined forces of what felt like the whole sports hall, the friction between the 100′s of pages kept the books stuck fast together!

Saturday saw the whole Fair move down to Green Park Station in central Bath where the Clucking Cups, Belching Bucket and Booming Bin attracted attention with their mixture of high and low-pitched sounds.  Families and shoppers enjoyed experimenting and explaining the different physics phenomena and discovering their everyday applications.  Many were pleasantly surprised to find out how much fun science could be.
