The Institute of Physics in 2010   some highlights  physics around the uk  Some highlights of the Institute’s work in 2010:

- 2010 saw the launch of the IOP Business Forum, which aims to involve physics-based businesses in public policy activities

- A New Journal of Physics paper on Roberto Carlos’ 1997 free kick becomes one of the most popular media story of the year, viewed by 70 million people worldwide

- We’ve now got 40 000 members… and counting! This year we also launched our special student membership for 16–19 year-olds

- Our IOP for Africa fundraising campaign raised over £8,000 in the first week. That’s enough money to provide a full set of practical equipment, including books, stationery and experiments, for two  schools over the course of a year. Help us support even more schools!

- The physics shows we run in collaboration with Butlins reached over 35,000 visitors in 2010 – we hope to reach even more in 2011

- We’ve published new case studies on radar, synchrotron light and neutron scattering

- Policy success: Training and Development Agency for schools will publish a separate physics target for recruiting teachers
