IOP celebrates with the new cohort of IOP Teacher Training Scholars

“Find opportunities to talk about how amazing science is” was the first piece of advice Dan, Physics Network Coordinator, offered IOP Teacher Training Scholars at the second of two Celebration events. “If you don’t tell them, who will?”

This year, the 2018 cohort of IOP Scholars gathered at The Grange City Hotel in London, and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester to celebrate their achievements as they embark on their teacher training year.

Both of the events included a talk from IOP Teacher Support Manager, Chris Shepherd, , about what the scholars should expect in their teacher training. He highlighted that they will have the opportunity to explore creativity in the classroom, but emphasised that acceptance is important when things don’t go quite to plan – drawing from his experience of cooking bacon in the lab (don’t try this one at school!). Chris also discussed the importance of developing resilience, and making time for extra-curricular activities.

 

IOP Scholars

The scholars tried out a popular classroom activity, the Marvin and Milo Jet Propelled Balloons, and made several innovative adaptions to the activity. The new teachers were able to expand on the activity by discussing common misconceptions that their students might have and what they might to overcome them.

Finally, we heard from former IOP scholars who shared their experiences. David, who spoke at the event in London, told the scholars that his motivation to teach came from wanting to change perceptions of physics, and instil that its hard work and an open mind that’s needed to succeed. He also reflected on his best experience so far; which he said was teaching physics at KS3 and addressing common misconceptions.

Tom spoke in Manchester, and passed on his advice to the scholars which included telling them to take the time to make your lessons interesting and encouraging them to focus on the positive, remembering what went well in a class, not just on things that didn’t go as you’d hoped. He finished his presentation echoing Dan’s words about the difference you can make as a teacher – “If you don’t, then who will?”
