Morphogenesis: where physics meets art

Visitors to the Institute’s website and readers of IOP Journals will have noticed the colourful designs which feature online and on many journal covers.  These images are created by Frederique Swist, Senior Graphic Designer at IOP Publishing, based on original physics research and journal diagrams.  Now they are on show in Bristol as part of the View Art Gallery‘s Autumn Group Exhibition ‘Morphogenesis‘.

Fred’s work focuses on visualising physics through art.  She has been manipulating and developing scientific imagery for the last five years, transforming them into new powerful images in their own right.  Her fresh approach to exploring the relationship between art and science has attracted interest from the scientific community and beyond.

A private showing on September 30th provided invited guests with an opportunity to preview the new works and chat to the artist about their creation.

Morphogenesis - the creation of shape – showcases a diverse range of work with within a common theme.  The 5 artists, including Fred, have been inspired by geography, physics, the female form, and light movement to create high impact shapes and colour, in different artistic forms.  The show also includes prints from local artists and a special guest artist on the closing weekend.

The show runs from October 1st to November 15th at the View Art Gallery, Hotwells Road, Bristol.  Details of the gallery and opening times can be found here: www.viewartgallery.co.uk/exhibition1.html.  If you visit the exhibiton, more information about the science underpinning the images is available in a leaflet at the gallery.

If you can’t make it to Bristol, a number of Fred’s images have been turned into one-off canvas prints which are exhibited in the Institute’s headquarters at 76 Portland Place, London.
