It is with great sadness that the Institute of Physics has learnt of the death of Dr Uschi Steigenberger OBE.
Dr Steigenberger was a well-respected, active member in the IOP community who was a prominent member of the Science Board, and was instrumental in the early development of the Women in Physics programme, which led on to the Institute’s Juno Project to counter under representation of women in university physics departments.
Further to this, she was a senior member of staff at STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where she retired in 2012 as Director of the ISIS facility after a long and distinguished career. She was recognised for her contribution to UK science by the award of an OBE, presented by Science Minister Jo Johnson in January 2017.
Dr Steigenberger was an asset to our physics community and a role model for women in STEM. She will be greatly missed. She passed away on Wednesday 12 December 2018 in Oxford after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
