New Royal Society exhibition: Beyond Ourselves
Funded by the Arts Council, Beyond Ourselves is to be held at the premises of the Royal Society in London. The exhibition brings together six innovative contemporary artists who have all placed the potential of enquiry and thought at the core of their work. Works include video installations, sculpture, collage and paintings, which are to be innovatively displayed throughout the Royal Society building.
The origins of the Royal Society lie in an ‘invisible college’ of natural philosophers who began meeting in the mid-1640s to discuss the new philosophy of promoting knowledge of the natural world through observation and experiment, which we now call science. The spirit of scientific enquiry is evident throughout the varied works, which respond directly to man’s quest to understand the world and his place within it.
The work articulates the artist’s sense of wonder of the natural phenomena in our universe. With this, Beyond Ourselves aims to inspire a new approach for contemporary artists.
‘This is a fresh and thought provoking show in which these artists are encouraging the viewer to consider the role of imagination in our quest to understand our world better. Their interest lies in creating innovative work that seeks to inspire all of us to question what we know and do not know. I would like the viewer to feel as though a door has been opened for them’, Ingrid Hinton, Curator
