Science for All at the Show

Physics was back at the 2010 Devon County Show and this time Marvin & Milo (well, their experiments) were there too!  Once again the ‘Science WithInTent’ Marquee played host to volunteers from the Institute of Physics South West, Gary the Musical Clown and North Wyke Research Station – all coordinated by Devon Education Business Partnership.  During 3 days the sun shone down and over 1500 people visited the tent to have a go at the hands-on science experiments…

Loud Lollies certainly were popular, we got through well over a thousand lolly sticks!  Some visitors searched high and low for the source of these little noise-makers, until they eventually found our tent.

Young and old were fascinated by our ‘mind-controlled’ ketchup sachets & fish in the Cartesian Divers

With the animal noises from the Clucking Cups and Moo-ing Bin, some visitors thought they were back in the Livestock Arena.  Amazingly, many people had never listed to a Musical Coathanger before, but they made the most of their opportunity!

The Inseparable Books proved impossible to get apart, even for the Guardsmen of the Coldstream Guards, who resorted to a sharp sword in an attempt to solve the problem.

Oxford University physics student Fahran drew a lot of attention with her ‘PowerStriders‘ – the bouncy stilts seemed to defy the laws of physics and intruiged passers-by.  Spot her in the Devon County Show official video

Whilst Fahran was proficient on the stilts & fellow volunteer Tom learnt fast, your Regional Officer needed a little helping hand…
