Goonhilly satellite station set for new start
Money from the government’s regional growth fund will transform the former BT satellite station into a space and communication centre. GES, the company which leases Goonhilly near Helston from BT, wants to upgrade the existing antennas and reopen the visitor centre.

French Alpine glaciers in retreat
Glaciers in the French Alps have lost a quarter of their area in the past 40 years, according to new research presented at the American Geophysical Union fall meeting. In the late 1960s, the ice fields covered some 375 sq km; by the late 2000s, this area had fallen to about 275 sq km.

Journey into the uncharted voids of the Milky Way
Scientists at the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) said that the Voyager 1 space probe, which has travelled about 11 billion miles since its launch in 1977, has entered the cosmic equivalent of the doldrums, where the high-speed solar winds die down at the very edge of the Solar System.
