Both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Sciences, the two leading science organisations in the US, have warned that the best UK-based academics will flock to America unless the UK invests more in science.

The UK’s science minister, Lord Drayson, has written an exclusive column for the New Scientist’s S Word blog, defending recent comments about the need to demonstrate the relevance of science through its application.
Universities recruit more manages than academics
Not specific to physics but perhaps indicative of a worrying trend, The Daily Telegraph reports that universities are ‘hiring managers at three times the rate of academics’. The findings come via data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
