Watch the ‘Kings of Cool’ Superconductivity Lecture live from Belfast

The Institute of Physics Ireland invites you to watch the annual Northern Ireland Science Park Christmas Lecture on the History, Science and Applications of Superconductivity live online on Wednesday 7 December from 11:00AM (GMT). 

This is an exciting opportunity to take part in an interactive webcast to see live presentations and demonstrations from one of the pioneers of superconductivity and superconducting devices, Professor George Walmsley.

Professor Walmsley will guide the audience from the discovery of Superconductivity a century ago through its applications today and to where it might take us in the future. 
Superconductivity, or the complete loss of electrical resistance experienced by some metals at low temperature, was discovered a century ago by the Dutchman, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes.

George will describe this history and Belfast’s surprising involvement  and explain the science of super-conductivity and its (magnetic) effects. Norman Apsley will discuss current and future applications of those effects with the help of material from Oxford Instruments, a UK Fortune 250 company that has grown from university spin-out on the strength of the phenomenon.
